What is an HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default image format used by Apple devices (iPhone, iPad) since iOS 11. While it offers high quality with smaller file sizes compared to JPG, it is not widely supported on Windows and older devices. Our tool helps you bridge this compatibility gap instantly.

You may also see the extension .heif — HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the container standard, and HEIC is Apple's specific implementation. They are essentially the same thing. Our converter handles both .heic and .heif files without any extra steps.

HEIC vs JPG: Key Differences

Understanding when to convert helps you make the right decision for your photos.

HEIC / HEIF

  • ~50% smaller file size than JPG
  • Same visual quality at half the size
  • Supports transparency (alpha channel)
  • Not supported on Windows by default
  • Not accepted by most websites
  • Limited editing software support

JPG After conversion

  • Works on every device and OS
  • Accepted by all websites and apps
  • Full support in every image editor
  • No codec or extension required
  • Easy to share via email or social media
  • ~Slightly larger file than HEIC

Quality note: At 90%+ quality, HEIC-to-JPG conversion is visually lossless. The difference is imperceptible in everyday use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

HEIF is the container format standard; HEIC is Apple's specific variant using HEVC compression. In practice, .heic and .heif files work identically — our converter handles both.

Will converting to JPG reduce photo quality?

At the default 90% quality setting, the difference is imperceptible. Set quality to 100% for the highest possible output. The conversion itself adds no artifacts beyond what JPG compression normally introduces.

Does HEIC to JPG conversion keep EXIF data (date, location, camera info)?

Yes. Our converter preserves the original EXIF metadata — including capture date, GPS location, camera model, and exposure settings — in the output JPG file. Your photo history and organization stay intact.

Does iPhone still save photos as HEIC in iOS 18?

Yes. iOS 18 still defaults to HEIC for photos. To switch to JPG for new photos, go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. This only affects new photos — existing HEIC files still need to be converted.

Can I convert HEIC using the iPhone Files app?

No — the Files app conversion method no longer works as of iOS 17/18. The most reliable way is to use an online converter like this one, or transfer photos to your PC with Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic (which auto-converts to JPG).

How do I convert HEIC to JPG for free?

Drag and drop your HEIC files into the converter above, click "Convert All", and download your JPG files. Completely free with no sign-up required.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. All conversions run 100% locally in your browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device — not even temporarily.

Is there a file or quantity limit?

None. Convert as many HEIC or HEIF files as you want — entire photo libraries at once — with no file size cap.
